Ozone Therapy
What is Ozone Therapy?
Ozone therapy is an oxidative modality and an effective therapeutic method that helps increase oxygenation, detoxification, blood flow circulation, and oxygen delivery, and has also been shown to modulate the immune system for improved defenses against infection.
Ozone is a reactive form of oxygen, and unlike regular oxygen, is composed of three oxygen atoms instead of two.
It is the addition of the third oxygen atom that makes ozone “supercharged” oxygen and gives it all of its remarkable oxidative medical properties.
Oxidation assists the body to perform optimally. When the body is functioning optimally, it is able to fight against conditions it may have once been too weak to withstand.
Most people associate the presence of ozone as a natural element in our environment (the smell after a rainstorm). What most don’t know is that ozone is a powerful oxidizer and potentiator of human physiology that stimulates all sorts of physiological activity.
Ozone therapy works by increasing oxygen utilization which in turn assists with organ function, hormonal regulation, anti-aging, digestion, elimination, reproduction, memory, and many other functions.
How can Ozone Therapy Help?
Today, medical ozone therapy is common throughout European medical clinics, and its use has gradually been spreading in America over the last 25 years.
This biological therapy has been validated in numerous studies and is often effectively administered for a multitude of conditions including:
- Infectious diseases (viral, bacterial, parasitic, or fungal)
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Arthritis
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Dementia
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Fibromyalgia
- Heart disease
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis)
- Autoimmune Diseases (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hashimoto’s, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis)
How is Ozone Therapy Administered?
Ozone gas is an extremely versatile therapy and can be administered in an array of ways.
Some of the routes of administration include:
Ozone Blood IV: This process is called Major Autohemotherapy (MAHT). Major Autohemotherapy is a hyperbaric procedure during which blood is drawn, mixed with an ozone/oxygen mix, and then reinserted into the patient. Usually, between 100 and 200 ml of blood are extracted and mixed with an equal volume of gas at an ozone concentration of around 40 ug/ml. Each time the blood has been drawn and returned to the patient is considered to be one pass.
At Ascend, we use the 10-Pass capable Zotzmann Ozon 2000. This state of the art, German engineered machine can create both negative (vacuum) and positive (hyperbaric) pressure. This allows patients to achieve higher doses (more passes) of therapy, in turn achieving more therapeutic benefit.
Ozone Sauna: The use of a sauna should be an important part of any detoxification program. The sauna increases the eliminative, detoxifying and cleansing capacity of the skin by stimulation of the sweat glands and also promotes healthy skin tone and texture due to increased blood circulation.
Using the steam sauna with ozone allows the steam to surround the body and ozone can be introduced through the skin. Humid heat opens the pores, which allows the ozone through the skin to the bloodstream, where it can travel to the fat and lymph tissue. It is very important to cleanse the lymph tissue of toxins and the ozone/steam sauna is the easiest and best way to accomplish this.
Artificially induced hyperthermia (rising body temperature results in the destruction of bacteria and viruses) combined with heavy sweating and a cleansing effect initiated by ozone will result in the elimination of toxins accumulated mainly in the lymphatic system relieving the liver from the difficult task of dealing with them.
Through the centuries, men and women have used steam to purify the skin, soothe sore muscles, boost circulation and to simply relax. The combined action of moist heat and ozone cleanse the lymphatic system, which carries 90% of the body’s fluids. Ozone brings oxygen to the tissues for enhanced health and vitality. The combination of steam and ozone is a natural, effective way to promote a refreshing sense of well-being.
Rectal Insufflation: As the name suggests, “Rectal Insufflation” refers to introducing ozone into the body through the rectum. If you are new to ozone, this sounds like a very strange thing to do. However, oxygen (O2) has been infused rectally during surgery for years, due to the fact that oxygen is easily absorbed through the walls of the colon.
The same is true for ozone (O3). Rectal Ozone Insufflation is performed regularly in clinics worldwide, and can also be performed in the home. Rectal insufflation is painless and a minimally invasive way to use ozone in your home
Ozonated Oil: Ozonated Olive Oil is an amazing substance, used for healing wounds that would otherwise not heal. Stories abound of patients unable to heal wounds with topical and IV antibiotics, finally able to heal their wounds with topical application of ozonated olive oil.
The secret? The Ozonated Olive Oil not only kills bacteria, fungus, and other pathogens thereby sterilizing the wound, but it also does what no antibiotic could possibly do – stimulate the healing process.
Prolozone Therapy: A Direct injection of ozone gas is administered into painful and damaged joints. We can combine the process with Prolotherapy and it’s called Prolozone.
Prolozone is a form of non-surgical ligament reconstruction and is a permanent treatment for chronic pain. Prolozone is a connective tissue injection therapy of collagen-producing substances and ozone gas which can reconstruct damaged or weakened connective tissue in and around joints.
